Dealing Difficult Leaders

Dealing difficult leaders

People say, 'It is easy to work with machines and animals but not with men'. Actually they are the people who imagine men as machines who will not question their decisions and just follow the orders. This attitude in people in leading positions or families or members of team with power of twisting the decisions create confusions and ultimate conflicts in the team or family. IGNORE THEM and THEIR WORDS. That is the best way of making yourself free from the emotional tortures you suffer from the conflict. Neither you appreciate them nor oppose them in the process. Always be informative and rational without any emotional attachment to organisation, family and group or relationship. Never show your anger or internal sufferings in the events. They do not deserve those. They are the people those who have no responsiveness towards human emotions. Because many have acted with them in such manners that the mental and emotional faculties of responsiveness either died or defunct in them. They can never have same realisation and rational what you have. Therefore never waste time and labour in changing them . These type of leaders have got a fantastic quality too. They are very much focused to achieve the target. They too achieve countable targets. Their achievements are very much visible and measurable. Therefore they earn more praise and recognition than others. That is the way capacity, achievements, targets etc are measured across the world. There is no organisation they give importance on how muh joy and human values are earned while working. No body tries to measure what smoothness and harmony was expressed while someone is leading the work. Value system is totally ignored in HR system across the globe. Even those leaders also suffer a lot of agony. But they do not understand and find the origin of those disturbing and imbalancing factors in their life. They mostly hide those or pretend undisturbed.
Being a coach and motivator, I very often met with such people those who have very painful childhood or disturbed inhuman nurturing or guidance. Be careful of dealing with them or help them. Rather you must improve yourself while dealing such people. Occasions and events will definitely make you wise and mature in this direction. But you have to remain conscious and calm.

Lord Sri Jagannath: Centre of All the Livelihood activities in Odisha

Lord Sri Jagannath: Centre of All the Livelihood activities in Odisha

Intellectuals and Bhaktas of Lord Sri Jagannath say all the philosophies and religions are merged and lost their identity as the river loose its identity when meets the sea. I know one thing, He is quite huge and beyond my imagination. His magics are too great. But the science and technologies used in managing the day to day affairs of deities in different seasons are truly very interesting and very disciplined. Food prepared here follow certain protocols and some even follow particular seasons. All the flowers used with deities are having tremendous medicinal properties those cure very difficult ailments like magic. Lord Sri Jagannath isknown as the Great Aswini, Aswini Kumars , Divine twins are deities of healing in Hindu systems. But he is beyond them. Sometime He uses, medicines, in some cases herbs, sometime Mantras, sometime counseling, sometime exercises, sometime magic and so on to heal the sufferer. He knows how, when, what to be used. Amazing ! But each process and discipline is having great importance in system of healing.

54 types of dishes are used here as 'Prasada'. The raw materials are from several places from India and dishes are sometime very cheap and some time those are very costly. But the processing of those are extremely disciplined and scientific which require particular system of cooking and methods of arrangement. Aesthetically those are very beautiful. The aroma of each 'Prasad' increases the appetite. Most interestingly the food prepared here are very hygienic and very healthy. Even if some one takes beyond his regular in take quantity, nothing wrong happens. If a sick one takes it also there will be no digestive problems. What great science is there ! Similarly there is a magical effect of 22 stairs of Sri Jagannath Temple. People visiting the temple get good relaxation when they climb it. Many of the Bhaktas found their knee pain, gastritis, joint pains disappeared after visiting the temple. Because climbing the stairs with cool and devoted mind & heart for a month will definitely relax the muscles. There will be definite changes in a sick persons if he/she visits the temple for a month.
Similarly the materials used for colouring the deities, their clothes in different occasions are natural. Different vegetable colours , stones are used for this purpose. Those are healthy and having no reaction with human or animals. Use of those in textile house colouring, wood carpentry or metals, earthen pots etc are unique in nature. Those are found to be very effective and commercially viable when used in art and craft. Whatever art & craft used for Sri Jagannath's rituals and rites those look very simple and symbolic. But those bear logical and scientific tempers and spirit. Those have all the signs of sustainable development of people and species. Therefore He is treated as People's Deity. I request all the researchers those who are working in development sphere to study the rituals and rites in scientific terms. Some have great philosophies, some have anthropological significance, But many involve science and technologies those touch all the aspects of human progress.

In Support of demonitising of Indian currencies of higher values

In Support of demonitising of Indian currencies of higher values
Cash based transactions or physical currency transactions are the major reasons of crime. Cash is to be kept hidden from people and criminal. For a human being and its financial progress we find so many security measures which demand huge labour, money, time and so on.Terrorists across borders, Naxal terrorists, criminals and corrupt people inside are attacking the weak health of nation. It is true that they are powerful because of fake Indian Currencies of higher denominations in Thousands of Crores, illegal supply of ammunition and hoarding of our legal higher currencies through wrong means. They are killing our own people. They are murdering our young children. They facilitating corrupt systems in to our administration. They are pumping and promoting wrong medicines in the health systems. They have been into GM crop promotion and spoiling our biodiversity. They are promoting low quality gadgets and materials in the name of globalisation treaty. They are weakening the economy and facilitating inflation to rise. They have taken our sleep away. How to finish them.? The best way is to demonitising them. Govt official source says more than 85% of total currencies published were of higher denomination . Today what we faced is due to shortage of currencies of lower denominations. PM Modi and team should have prepared , printed and circulated enough currencies while preparing themselves for this change. Whatever he has done is remarkable. At one shot his Govt. deactivated above criminal activities and also stopped bribing voters of coming election in several states. Thus he could handle further criminal activities and criminalizing the process of voting system. Parties in power will face serious problems and some of them may vanish from coming election too. Corruption and criminalisation in election were becoming an election winning strategy for all the parties. This sudden change has created tremendous change in Indian election space. Cashless transaction will have complete record.

Cashless transaction requires people's awareness. This change at present made people at remotest part of India aware of power of money and currency in hand. They also realised the risk of physical cash that is the major reason of criminal activities in their own live. In India and all over the world people from different countries and culture always preach that money is the reasons of all the difficulties and conflicts. Therefore they try to hide those do not discuss abut those in public. We can make the currencies invisible but not the money. Money is a power meant to bring prosperity in he world. Making currencies invisible from market will definitely minimise criminal activities and strengthen the power of money. But making currencies invisible by corrupt people and criminals will increase the plight of people and money power of the nation. The old basics of economy is failing because of poor understanding of economists about money and currencies. Their Universities are still believing on the old theories too. There is a need to make Universities to become SMART and modern as there have been significant changes in economic behaviour in people and use of good technologies in accounting process and planning that is going more precise and accurate. Absurdity and superficial apprehensions have meaning now to bring wellness of mass. Everything is going to be focused , pinpointed and purposeful for the development of all.

Attracting youth in to agriculture:-Sustainable way to food security and improving agriculture

Attracting youth in to agriculture:-Sustainable way to food security and improving agriculture

Bibhu Prasad Mohanty
State Head - Odisha
Indian Society Of Agribusiness Professionals

Backdrop
In 2003, while addressing a state level seminar I raised concern over retaining and engaging youth in agriculture. Some of the very highly talented learned audiences raised several concerns and supported me equivocally. I remember in 'Prison Diary' of Sri Aurobindo, the great philosopher, poet and political seer of India, in 1905, wrote about collaboration between educated youth along with unlettered peasantry community in agriculture and allied activities for peace and prosperity of this country. My mother, who is no more now, explained me this when I was 8yrs old. Again the same has been echoed in 2006 by my Guru Prof. Dr. M.S.Swaminathan , the chief architect of Green Revolution in India (CONSULTATION ON ATTRACTING AND RETAINING YOUTH IN FARMING HELD ON 28 TH MAY, 2006 at New Delhi – SUMMING-UP BY PROF M.S. SWAMINATHAN, CHAIRMAN, NCF).

Since my prime youth my personal effort remained to attract youth to make agriculture a main stream activities. As I was from a joint family without much land property which was lacking capital always got into serving different organisations for the livelihood. I have seen the days , even today, a man employed in an organisation (NGO/Corporate/Govt) is much dignified than a farmer with heavy land property and good production systems, even with good income than a doctor and engineer or MBA educated person. That might be the reason why may parents also wanted me to be employed some where and live a life of dignity. Although I do not have any landed property , fortunately I have friends those have landed property and consult me in their agriculture activities. I believe clarity on low cost drudgery free appropriate technology, good knowledge and understanding about climate, agri-inputs, application of appropriate genetic science & seed technologies, knowledge of labour dynamics, financial support system along with risks and insurance etc can make a person very comfortable in agriculture. Agriculture professionals are not in farming for so many reasons. They have got academic knowledge which are required to become big officers who can only talk about agriculture but can not put their sweat into it. They are mostly seating in A/C rooms and seldom get into active agriculture.

Present market is conducive to attract youth into agriculture
When I see the price of beans in village to city market is Rs.80/- per kg and steel kg is fluctuating from Rs.50/- to 60/- it raises so many questions and feelings in my mind. Therefore this is a time I feel when educated youth must come up to get into agriculture and allied activities. One of my close friends Mr. Biraja Mohapatra a thinker and dreamer of same fraternity I belong to always consoles me whenever I get upset over the fact of youth leaving agriculture. He says very soon people will realise your concern.

I think the time has come people must have realised. It has come to notice that every day at least 2000 youth are leaving agriculture across the globe. Youth leaving agriculture is a world wide phenomenon. 65% of total investment of nations in this world goes to war and defence sector. That is the reason why entire world has been war mood and competitions. World consciousness itself is not ready to go for peace and prosperity . Therefore in allover the world people witness so many turmoils and differences or uproars in respective parliaments and borders. People speak about peace while connect with religion. People talk about peace and prosperity and attract towards power & sex. People speak on great future and attract youngsters into extremism.

The Challenges
Unfortunately our bureaucracy is yet to understand that they are educated mass who are trained to think and act differently , systematically and sincerely. Many of them are owners of poor attitude , narrowness, selfish interest and silly minds. These negative resources are so heavy that their consciousness always drag their life to shrink into conflicts and confusions. It is a fact that eventually their identity get into oblivion. They can not make the greater interests achieved because they have no capacity to carry the force with them. They are burdens and parasites who are born to play their role to make the things delayed and prolong the time of achievement so that the perfection can carry more detail experiences and long term effects.

Present conditions of lethargic bureaucracy, attitude, mindset, physical status, financial complexities, knowledge confusions, market conflicts , political turmoils, immature shortsighted leaderships, rampant corruption, slow judiciary system, confused education policy, so many unrest in public youngsters are grown into an environment when they themselves search for directions. They find themselves in a poor state of affairs and society demands morality , obedience and loyalty towards law. religion, cult , family and community etc. Youth is already a group of people those who have no peace of mind and trying to run and only run without even knowing their direction.

Present complex banking and insurance in agriculture and allied activities are going very tough and stringent. People in these two areas are mostly very clever and wish quick money back. But agriculture and agribusiness are not matching the expectation of so called financial institutions. Quick return of the loan is not possible in case of agriculture sector. But banks usually create pressure for quick recovery of advances. That is the major reason of increasing cases of suicide in India. Purposefully and strategically these two financial support institutions keep distance from agriculture and their information on the schemes are very weak and processes of financing and insurance are very complex. Therefore moneyed people and big farmers take the benefit under several policy nexus.

Our education policy is trying o focus on creating specialists who have low sensibility with high focus on mechanical life style and become money making machines. After certain time they also realise that their effort of making money is too limited. They are trained to make limited money through out their life. Also they are restricted to certain thought process that always make them afraid of loss and uncertainty. They become habitual to certain life style which put them into a status that never never allows them to think beyond. Illusion of making money, living in all luxuries are mostly considered as great and higher life . They never get the opportunity taste the abundant contribution of nature, its vastness in length and height. They remain dissatisfied till their end. They suffer from jealousy, competition, greed, anger, vanity, fear and so many negative emotions. Indian Subcontinent has been preaching ' Sa Vidya Ya Bimuktaye '.It says, that is knowledge what liberates a person from all the negative emotions and thoughts. Liberation from negativity is the only aim that ensures joy. Agriculture is told a way of 'tapasya', penance to gain salvation, by great political philosopher none other than Chanakya. Today there has been demand for skilled people. Education has been into skill development only which changes as the condition and technology change. There has been very rare effort on liberation of mind and heart from confusion, conflicts, negative feelings which would make a person calm and real ready container to become highly wise and proficiently skilled to meet the daily requirements with future prospects.

Suggestions and Solutions
Therefore it is a call fr youth to get into scientific agriculture and allied activities without affecting nature and life, which will make future people to live with peace and prosperity. Agriculture, agribusiness, food processing, fishery, poultry, diary , animal husbandry, renewable energy , biomass energy and waste management are the areas of vocations of great prospects.

Role of Govt and NGOs
Govt has to become sure of its drive towards agri based activities in the country. Investments should be on future young people which is missing in all over the world. As a democratic nation we must have to make democracy a culture . Agriculture is the only vocation in Indian subcontinent which has all the possibilities to bring real and effective democracy into effect. There should be systematic well orchestrated projects and programs for youth to be in agriculture. Our youth are now educated and they are mostly not trained on agriculture. They are exposed to labour intensive agriculture. They have very less idea about small machines tools and technologies which can make agriculture very easier and profitable. Thus they can live a comfortable and maintain lavish life style like urban employed people.

Role of banking and Insurance sector
To bring youth into agriculture there is a need to understand the requirement of finance and insurance in scientific and systematic manner. No universal formula and superficial observation can solve the financial issues in agriculture sector. Officers in banking and insurance sector those who are involved in financing farm families should also act as advisors to their customers and suggest right methods, provide appropriate suggestions on reducing labour and introducing low cost machines and tools so that farmers can benefit from agriculture. Banks should also engage social workers, sociologists and psychologists to counsel farmers on right adaption and exposures on machines, tools, technologies those can help them in enhancing the crop yield and marketing of those.

Introducing and upgrading right technologies
Today the education system has very weak input on agriculture and various food processing activities . This is one of the important reasons Indian agriculture is suffering . To make it interesting low labor intensive, farmer friendly and profitable, there is a need to popularise agriculture in a modern way. Following approaches can definitely make a great change.
  1. Awareness to homestead nutri gardens (farms), backyard poultry with high egg yielding breeds, dairy and fish ponds be initiated; the relevant emphasis should be on nutrient dense vegetables like the green leafy vegetables, beans etc. and fruits rich in vitamin C and beta carotene. To ensure such nutri produce with safe & high yield varieties, provisions for good quality seeds be made and planting material (saplings), organic methods like Vermi compost, organic pesticides and water harvesting/ water saving methods need to be introduced.
  2. Introducing machines
  • Transplanters manual and power operated,
  • Work place for tractors and self propelled equipment ,
  • Chaff cutter, drudgery free tools and equipments and methods
  • Devices for load carrying Improved tools and equipment available for following operations need to be promoted on a large scale Seeding (Maize dibblers, Direct rice seeders),Transplanting of rice (Rice transplanter),Weeding in uplands (Wheel hoes, long handled weeders) Weeding in wetlands (Cono weeder),Harvesting of Wheat and rice (Improved sickle),Maize dehusking and shelling (maize shellers, maize dehusker shellers) Grain cleaning (hand winnowers, Hanging type grain cleaner, pedal cum power operated grain cleaner),Groundnut decortication (sitting type groundnut decorticator),Threshing of paddy (pedal operated paddy thresher, power operated hold on type paddy thresher).Demonstration of ergonomically improved tools and equipment.
  1. Awareness to create local grain and processed or semi processed storage facilities
  2. Managing the waste of foodstuff, grains, dairy products etc
  3. Value addition in processed food
  4. Awareness on safety measures in farm field. Skill development about operating farm equipments .
  5. Safety awareness programs on tractors and other agricultural machines.
  6. Training programs with demonstrations of women friendly and youth attrctng tools and equipment.
  7. Fundamentals of packaging -covering following topics
    • Importance of Packaging, History of Package Development, Packaging materials, Paper, jute bag, plastic bags, glass containers etc .
    • Characteristics of basic packaging materials: Paper (paper board, corrugated paper, fiber board), Glass, Metal, Plastics, Foils and laminates, retort pouches, Package forms,
    • Legal requirements of packaging materials and product information in relation to dairy products and delicate food stuffs.
    • Packaging of milk and dairy products such as pasteurized milk, UHT-sterilized milk, aseptic packaging, fat rich products-ghee and butter, coagulated and desiccated indigenous dairy products and their sweet meades, concentrated and dried milks including baby foods. Modern Packaging Techniques; Vacuum Packaging, Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP),
    • Eco-friendly packaging, Principles and methods of package sterilization, Coding and Labelling of Food packages, Aseptic Packaging (AP), Scope of AP and pre-requisite conditions for AP
    • Description of equipments (including aseptic tank) and machines- Micro-processor controlled systems employed for AP, Package conditions and quality assurance aspects of AP, Microbiological aspects of packaging materials. Disposal of waste package materials, Packaging Systems.
  1. Safety gadgets
  • for chaff cutters and sugarcane crushers
  • Safety cover for pedal operated paddy thresher
  • use of Gumboots, gloves ,caps etc
  • Belt and chain type conveyor feeding system for high capacity thresher
  • A tractor trailer with brakes and other safety features
  • Lighting system with turning indicators for tractor trailers
  • A safety cover for well/ tube well
  • Safety measures to be taken in handling insecticides and pesticides and related machines and equipments. Demonstration of spraying safety kits (face mask, eye goggles, aprons, field caps, hand gloves and gum boot) to farmers to get feed back and reducing exposure to chemicals.
  1. Design and operational parameters, performance evaluation and maintenance aspects of different renewable technologies like gasifiers, biogas plants, solar passive heating devices, photovoltaic cells and arrays, briquetting machines and balers; bio-diesel utilization in CI engines.
  2. Switching over to horticultural production, profit, meeting market demand, supply and networking
  3. Orchid for food, for ornamental and decoration purpose and their industrial supply
  4. Fish production, market, supply, storage, networking
  5. Lac production and making farmers rich through meeting industrial need
  6. Forestry based profitable projects and market linkage of rawand processed stuff
  7. Market behaviour and accounting
  8. Understanding demands and managing the supplies to market
  9. Using ICT, Gyan Chaupal, Village Knowledge centre exclusively for youth
  10. Gender behaviour on equipment and tools (usually men feel women can not manage modern equipments, machines and processes)
  11. Encouraging learning and teaching through and of ICT use of mobile phones, Internet, use of vernacular language in ICT and soon.

These efforts must be brought in well planned schemes and projects at grassrots level. Let them feel elevated and confident. Their low feelings or comparative feeling with urban educated mass must be removed. They should also feel elevated and liberated .

Design Description
The Micro Hot Point Improved Biomass Stove generally consists of a combustion chamber, a top section and a base. The hearth of the combustion chamber is made of perforated stainless steel plate , the outside of which encased in a mild steel casing. The grate or fuel bed is at the base of the combustion chamber. The base of the stove consists of a door for loading fuel wood into the combustion chamber, and few whole in the base which serve as combustion air inlets to the chamber. A drawer is incorporated at the base to facilitate the removal of ash which would have collected at the tray. The top of the stove consists of the pot seat, designed to accomodate any type heating utensils. The pot seat is designed such that the pot sinks to a depth below the top- most level of the stove. The stainless sttel ring selected for use is such that has the internal diameter equal to or closest to the external diameter of the cooking pot, thus ensuring that there is little or no clearance for pass above the pot seat. The diameter of the combustion chamber is such that it is smaller than the pot seat or the external diameter of the smallest pot that can be utilized on the stove. This is to ensure that the maximum amount of heat is transferred to the base of the pot . The distance between the fuel bed and the pot seat is also selected to allow for enough time for the complete combustion of the burning fuel particles before it strikes the base of the pot mounted on the pot seat.

Combustion Air Requirement
Following Ramakrishna (1992), a typical fuel wood has the following ultimate analysis by mass as shown in Table 1.

Table 1. Mass analysis of a typical fuel wood.

The combustion analysis based on the above mass composition gives a stoichiometric Air/Fuel ratio, A/F= 4.6107 kg air/kg fuel. For an actual air supply which is 20% in excess of stoichiometry, actual air/fuel ratio, A/Factual= 5.53284 kg air/kg fuel.

Key Features of Micro Hot Point Improved Biomass Stove : Single burner Height 12 inches Stainless Steel Combustion Chamber Bakelite handles Durable steel construction No moving parts Light weight (4kg) Removes need to blow on fire

Performance Parameters:
  1. Thermal Efficiency 25.4%
  2. CO/CO2 Ratio 0.02
  3. Output Thermal Wattage 1.2kW
  4. Burning Capacity 0.8-1.1 kg/hr.
  5. Average Product Lifespan: 5 years.

Discussion of Results of different tests

The results as per the test protocols of IIT, New Delhi show that the biomass stove has a maximum thermal efficiency of 25.4% and power delivery of 1.4kW, but a minimum specific fuel consumption of 0.492. This indicates a better performance when compared to the average thermal efficiency value of 17.9% for traditional mud stove as reported by George (1997), or the Kilakala stove which has a fuel saving capacity of 30% (Crewe 1990, Otiti 1991). The performance is also better when compared to the Improved Vented Mud stove (IVM) which has the average thermal efficiency values across fuels that varies from 10% to 23% which is comparable with the range of 10.8% to 19.6% reported by Pal and Joshi (1989). Furthermore, the thermal efficiency of the wood stove is not higher when compared to the thermal efficiencies of petroleum based fuel stoves such as the LPG stove, the kerosene wick stove, and the kerosene pressure stove with thermal efficiencies of 53.6%, 50% and 47%, respectively (TERI 1987).

Enahnced Performance:-The enhanced performance can be attributed to a number of factors. The first is the insulation provided round the combustion chamber. This minimizes the rate of heat loss across the wall of the combustion chamber by conduction and radiation, and ensures that a good proportion of heat is conserved within the chamber and directed towards the top of the chamber. The second is the smoke rings provided which eliminate the horizontal clearance between the pot and the pothole. This minimizes heat loss by radiation through the annulus between the pot and the pothole. The third factor is the design of the pot seat and the position of the flue gas exit port This ensures that the base of the pot sinks to a depth inside the pothole such that there is no vertical clearance between the pot base and the top of the stove, and that there is longer interaction between the flame and the pot base, bringing about maximum heat transfer to the pot, before the flue gases exit into the chimney. There is also the factor of availability of sufficient air that ensures the complete combustion of the fuel wood. On smokiness, it was observed that virtually all the flue gases was conveyed out of the test area through the chimney. The very small quantity of smoke noticed might have escaped as a result of construction inaccuracy in the roundness of the smoke rings leaving a very small gap between the pot and the ring. The escaping smoke, however, quickly diffuses into the air, causing insignificant fouling and irritation effects. It would be seen that the modifications made in providing insulation around the combustion chamber and sizable air inlet from base to admit adequate quantity of air for combustion, incorporating smoke rings to seal the annulus between the stainless steel pot and the pothole, and redesigning the configuration of the pot seat and the position of the flue gas exit port, have served to increase the thermal efficiency and therefore the percentage heat utilization of the stove. There has also been a drastic reduction in the smokiness of the stove, making it to be more user-friendly in health, comfort and convenience. Further modifications focused at redesigning the pot seat vis-à-vis the flue gas exit port in such a way that will minimize heat loss by radiation and convection, and ensure maximum heat transfer to the base of the pot can be pursued in future

How to operate it:- Fill the fuel wood entrance with dry wood. Then fill the inner cavity of the chula from the top with dry small twigs, dry leaves and fire those from top. There is no need of ferosene at all. Within 2 minutes chula will be ready for cooking. It has very less smoke, saving of at least 65% fuel. That takes care of household indoor atmosphere. Small kitchens of rural houses remain free from fumes and congesting carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other harmful smokes. Fuel wood smoke from kitchen in rural households is a major reason of bad health of women and children both. It is observed that the smoke of fuel wood is equivalent to 70-150 cigarettes per day.

Advantages of Micro Hotpoint Improved Biomass Smart cook stove as compared to traditional mud stove/ three stone fires:
Less Fuel:
  1. 70% less consumption of fuel
  2. Reduces drudgery of women collecting fuel wood
  3. Reduced deforestation due to less consumption of fuel wood
  4. Reduces dependency on plant fuel wood

Less Smoke:
  1. 65% reduction in smoke (particulate matter)
  2. Beneficial in terms of reduced Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) and healthier environment for women and children
  3. Reduces global warming due to reduction of black carbon and other warming agents
  4. Very less blackening of cooking pots and kitchen walls due to negligible cabon shooting

Less Cooking Time:
  1. Reduces the cooking time by approximately half
  2. Less exposure of women to kitchen smoke so people around cooking place do not feel fatigue due to smoke
  3. More time for economic/ recreational activities

Local Fuel:
  1. Locally available solid biomass used as fuel. Mostly dry twigs, dry leaves, dry cowdung cake, dry other animal dungs, crop wastes, tree wastes, after use wastes from biomasses.
  2. The fuel required does not demand the establishment of separate fuel supply chains and facilitates local biomasses insignficant for fuel purpose
  3. Timely and easy availability of cooking fuel around the household area. Thus it improves the autonomy of woman over kitchen.

Environmental benefits
This Smart stove meets the several Indian standards for efficiency and emissions. Testing and user feedback suggest that the Smart stove wood and neglected fuel biomas uses from an average of 1.1 kg per hour , thus saving 2.1 tonnes/year per household. There is huge pressure on wood resources in the India . Indian Ministry of Energy and Fuel estimates that 73% of wood comes from deforestation (non-renewable sources). Each stove reduces the equivalent of between 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Reduces Carbon Monoxide, other harmful emissions and indoor air pollution level helps to manage their health of women living in rural area,

ENERGY SAVING AND ENERGY GENERATING TECHNOLOGIES

World is waiting to see the movements of human mind in the journey of its life objective to establish divinity in world. Each area of innovations and application of innovation has its importance and relevance. But each time it tries to replicate one model for a long time without prioritising the relevancy. So the world very often face failure.

Ineffective environmental compliances by corporate adds poverty burden

Ineffective environmental compliances by corporate adds poverty burden

Dear Noble souls and great minds of India

I appeal here to consider following few lines in favour of our nation.

Corporate houses / industries/ mines get environmental clearance (EC) from Ministry of Environment and Forest. MOEF grants EC  under certain statutory conditions. One such condition is community development component. Under this polluting projects are suppose to spend 5% of total asset cost , at least within 25 km radius of the project or establishment. They should undertake development of local population in the areas of health, education, environment, infrastructure, women, children, livelihood, livestock, biodiversity and so on. Unfortunately they do not do that. At the time of reporting or making compliances they show what they are doing under CSR. It has been a practice by all most all the industries, mines and so on. They must understand CSR activity is part of profit and community development what is mentioned in Environmental clearance from MOEF is integral part of  the project cost. For years these corporate houses have been cheating our mother land by evading the expenditure towards environmental compliance. Every year our country looses development possibilities worth of billions of rupees. This is a shear cheating by corporate houses and polluting organisations and a huge lapse by your Ministry. This fund can be of great use in climate change aspects and mitigate many of the climatic vagaries in the country. Environmental issues created by these polluting bodies can contribute in very constructive manner by restoring the environment with the help of local community and make a great difference in the region.

Recommendations:-

  1.     Taking the flaw in to consideration, herewith, I recommend  to make changes in  compliance report format. It  should have enough space and privilege to accommodate the detail of expenditure in clear terms. To do this,  the action plan in relation to the project should be well spelt in advance by the corporate to MOEF and Pollution control board, District collector and Director of Environment and Forest, Directorate of Industry and mines, Directorate of concerned Dpts dealing with various development and welfare work in the state. Superficial data input in the project report allows such flaws to happen. We have to be very careful about it.
  2.     There should be a watch dog body formed at state level like pollution control board to conduct socio-economic-environmental audit of the community development activities and CSR performances of the companies.
  3.     Corporate houses must display the value of the projects under infrastructure development  under community development and CSR in public places as Govt does.
  4.     Welfare projects should be linked to existing Govt programs. No duplicity should be allowed in the area in terms of programs and projects. Therefore necessary clearance should be part of the implementation of the projects of corporate houses. It will help state Govt, local panchayats and communities to have direct involvement in the execution of projects.
  5.     Social audit should be part and parcel of community development work by corporate houses
  6.     Taking above points in to consideration,  mass scale livelihood and livestock development program should be encouraged in such a manner that people in the project area should feel no hostility towards the corporate houses.
  7. I am sending this mail to you and marking copies to other stakeholders, activist  groups active on environmental and developmental issues for kind attention and necessary action at their level.

With a hope of quick action on the above issue I express my gratitude for your kind acceptance.

Thanks with warm regards

Sustainable Development Vis-a-Vis Actual Corporate Social Responsibility

By Bibhu Prasad Mohanty
Sustainable Development has been defined in many ways by many philosophers, politicians, thinkers and scientists of great fame and authority.  But the most frequently quoted and used definition is from Our Common Future, also known as the Brundtland Report; “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:
1. the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
2. the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.”
Now a days it is shown to the world that corporate houses took up sustainable development as part of their profit making economic practices where Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the major area they focus to address many socio-economic-environmental issues and concerns. India has several development concerns. We all know that much to be done in the areas of agri-production- food security, food processing, equal distribution and sharing of common properties resources, land management, soil conservation, education/ human resources development, ground water management, human trafficking, child labour, begging on street, people with disabilities (PWD), women and children concerns, elderly people and poor people having low access to quality health services, loss of biodiversity, industrial pollution, climate change, digital divide, health and food concern of livestocks, transport, communication, research and analysis and popularisation of appropriate technology, legal awareness, employment/ self employment concerns and so on. As corporates of India are socially committed people expect them to take up above issues.
For any corporate production and profit are much more important than people and planet although they claim their concern over people and planet with pomps and drums. It is seen across the world; corporate houses put maximum effort, investment and time on production and profit. It is natural and a fact also. It should be like that. A corporate house is always responsible before its customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders like human resource, market and its own vision and mission. Therefore it is natural that profit will be its main motive. But CSR is the obligatory commitment of corporate houses before nation. They have promised before the nation in legal terms at Ministry of Environment and Forest to contribute towards the growth of local villagers, environment, infrastructure, ground water resources, and livelihood of people, education etc and serve nation.
Activities under CSR as  obligation  towards nation to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and cares that corporate houses voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large. Unfortunately that does not happen and they do not feel the importance of planet and people in the same way as they have feelings and concern towards profit. Hence the importances of CSR in the organisation remain neglected. They do make profit at the cost of environment, natural resources, culture society and mostly people. Indian corporate sector spends around Rs 40,000 crore on social expenditure. It is observed from various reports that companies drew exemptions ranging from Rs 5,000 to 6500 crore under income-tax laws per year. These figures sound improbable as Indian companies still do not distinguish between philanthropy and internal practices to benefit stakeholders such as employees and community. Thus a big confusion still exists in industries and mines operators in relation to CSR practices.
Effect of corporate houses and changes in society
Giagantic investments of corporates bring huge changes in any geographical location effecting on life style, culture, thinking process, economy and so on. But they remain away from taking the responsibility of the changes which bring several disturbances in environment, micro to macro economy; culture, poverty reasons, unhealthy & unknown effects on life and vegetation. The speed with which the corporate grow never matches with the growth or changes of people displaced, affected and live in close vicinity of industry or mines. People suffer a lot because the changes caused by the giant profit making units and sacrifice their peace and healthy life. We people in corporate claim that there is a positive economic change across the industrial area. It is true that corporate try to build up huge infrastructures, physical facilities and bring many other people benefiting programs. The underneath aim is to keep people silent over the large scale changes they make while operate on forest, agriculture land, streams, rivers which are mostly revered as, Mother nature- natural resources . With those the culture and emotion of local people are attached. Their livelihood, life style, food, traditional knowledge, medicines, religion, language and thinking process are inter-winged. Neither any progressive Govt nor any profit making business house can value it. Because the priority and mission motive is to move forward to make physical infrastructure, profit and facilities as the urban facility is a single point focus for them.
The major CSR activities by CSR
Companies conduct events like health camps, population control measures, support a few sick persons, give some scholarships, organise a few SHGs, a few sports events, impart trainings for some livelihood practices without linking them to further growth in the process of conducting CSR. Some corporates found to work on disability, some on geriatric issues, some work on street children. All these are either time bound projects or institution run activities or supports to some NGOs. They also meet the deficiencies of Govt run schemes or programs with an aim to enhance the quality of the programme. Short term activities are mostly eye washing efforts by corporates where sustainable development approaches are usually missed. Govt authorities and people’s representatives are mostly invited in such programs to grace the occasions and their visibility in the public are taken care in such a way  that the corporates get continuous illegal and quick legal favours and ultimately  the profit multiplies. Thus nation looses a lot of revenue, regularity of good practices, and continual improvisation in the process development. However some of the corporates have done some exemplary work in connection with sustainable development. They are rare in different nations.
Organisations careful about the ethical expenditures of the CSR fund are also careful about sustainability of the programs, projects and effects of events they organise. Their events always satisfy and linked to the vision, mission and sustainability reasons. When they fail to identify the reasons of sustainability in the program, projects or events, mostly local people’s unrest occur in the area. Today CSR is looked as strategic approach to manage the risks from local people’s resentment and superficially meet the commitment to Govt. When there is a resentment of people in Govt, media and politics get aware of the troubled relationship between people and corporate house. Before that they remain silent. Thus another pressure and conflicting situation arises. To meet these situations and pacify people’s outcry against negligence of corporate usually a collaborating effort of Liaison Department, PR Department, Corporate Communication and CSR Department come together. All of them in collaborative coordination try to meet the situations and solve through different means and methods. In these problem solving approaches two major approaches are usually observed. One is to calm down the reactions of Govt and media by applying legal and illegal means. Other one is fulfilling the demands of people through negotiation and some kind of philanthropic approaches.
Role of Govt in monitoring CSR activities of Corporate houses
The regulatory and monitoring units of Govt have been found to be helpless / lack regulatory provisions/ insincere towards monitoring of the actual happenings or development and expenditure made by corporates. It is found that   district collector or appropriate revenue officer who is responsible for monitoring of such huge funds and expenditures is also burdened with some emergency and more serious responsibilities which do not allow them to adequately vigilant on CSR funds which are usually spent by the corporate houses only. Thus there is scopes for corporate houses to either delay the expenditure of fund or knowingly use different means of operations where they only meet a portion of dedicated fund meant for CSR. Lack of concrete reports on CSR from independent body, without any prescribed indicators of development and expenditure of CSR fund the corporate get opportunities to play hide and seek role with Govt and people both. They do not play a transparent role in the process. Other aspect is that the corporate units are very pushy and adamant in making their objectives fulfilled by adhering to any means of activities including bribing and favouring Govt officials and pursuing people’s representatives.
Therefore the people and planet are least bothered and having low concern for corporate houses. Except a few those who have given autonomy to CSR Dept most of the corporates are superficial in CSR activities. They feel it is a waste of money in relation to profit. Therefore they either knowingly ignore the justified demand of development of people or delay the expenditure. This resulted with number of ill effects on people at locality of corporates. These organisation play with money and power so the poor common families suffer to a great extent and even meet uneven progress or get finished due to rapid changes in economy of the region and culture that influences the vicinity.
Human at the Centre of desired changes
Taking human at the centre it is found that poor people have very low access to information and resources both. Because of that they are either neglected or cheated or they are unable to avail the entitlements and benefits. Development denials to these people are a major concern of today. There are numerous models of solutions to the problems they face which are available across the world. Let’s replicate and improve those under CSR. That will be a great contribution to mankind by CSR activities by corporates. It will be a process not a mere camouflaging activity or altruistic behaviour of corporate houses. Thus the debate of confusion in CSR activity by corporate houses those who are focused only on profit will disappear. They will be considered as sincere socially responsible organisations which will not only gain support of nation but also buyers of their products, investors and have a human sensitive fame too. Therefore CSR should be passionately and professionally taken up by corporates.
The Human resource in CSR and Control of corporate by Human Resource Dept
The challenge is that at present HR divisions are mostly controlling CSR activitiesin most of the corporate houses. HR people are always into recruitment, counseling, training and many others activities concerning staff, workers and contractors. They are neither the professional social / development workers or nor development visionaries. Exceptional individuals are there in HR and other departments those who have passion to serve people and they developed their skill and experience in that line across time. They are people with exceptional abilities, passion and skill. Their number is very few. Development sector requires a different set of skills in conducting CSR programs. People those who get in to CSR activities should have a passion of development work and should be skilled/trained/ developed in that direction.
Conclusion
Therefore the management heads and senior people at decision making process of corporate house must understand that their passionate attitude towards people and planet will bring a lot of changes in environment, people and business of the organisation. There will be good wishes from people around them which is along term profit for the corporate. Secondly support of local people will strengthen them and will never restrict the growth of corporate due to resentments. Respect to own country men will be a significant visible achievement of the corporate to gain influence over several policy making policy for the country and state. Thus the face value of corporate will gain blessings of Govt. It strengthens the business too. Other aspect is becoming passionate towards growth of own people is a divinity we practice and become part of good happenings around us. We all wish to be recognised, patted and rewarded for our good works. Trade objective is to gain profit. CSR is the human face of trade. Anything befitting human and related areas is appreciated. Thus corporate houses are very much appreciated and recognised for leaving aside their greed and contributing for society and nature. It is also a spiritual aspect of trade. Unfortunately some corporate leaders and their top managements do not realise this. A smile in neglected person can bring tons of satisfaction to the person or people those who become means to it. Trade or industry will become a place to enjoy and means to real progress of nation.
